Session #4 - April 17

Given how hard - and how late - it was raining Saturday night, when I sent out the email suggesting that we try and play on Sunday morning, I'm sure many of you were thinking, "he drank a little too much and sniffed a little too hard during Havdala!"  (I assure you, it was only grape juice and cloves and some rose water).

But then Sunday morning came, the Sun was shining, the field was definitely playable, and some truly inspiring baseball was played!  While it was a bit chilly for the parents, none of the players even noticed!  Fun and inspiring games were played at all three levels.  Coach Kalkau spent time instructing all three levels today, starting with batting instructions for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, before he walked down to spend time with the K, 1st, and 2nd graders.

A few notes:
  • In last week's newsletter, I incorrectly said that Kayla Lieb, our photographer, is in 4th grade.  She's actually in 5th grade.  Sorry, Kayla!
  • Re: Uniforms: as of right now, the only uniform issues I know about are Andrew Zucker's and David Reitano's.  Leah Vilkas, Ben Taub, Haley Brunner, and Aaron Baruch's uniforms came in - if you didn't receive them, see either the coaches or me.  If there are any other uniform issues - please do let me know.
  • Re: Schedule - reminder that we are not playing during Passover, so the next session is on May 1st.
Kayla Lieb, our 5th grade photographer, was so inspired, she decided to write the following about the day:

Baseball Breakout
By Kayla Lieb

Wow! We've got quite the early risers on Sunday mornings at Solomon Shechter Baseball. There are the Brewers, the Orioles, and the Cubs playing on the fields. The Brewers have been playing full proper games, while the Orioles have been playing while learning other skills. The little Cubs have been learning how to hit, and where to run after hitting. All of the players have been enjoying the games while putting up with the weather at the same time. Spring has just flown in this week, along with the blossoms, but the weather is still a little bit freezing. And don't real baseball players need to learn to handle all sorts of weather? Especially in New York!

All of the players are getting the hang of pitching, running, and batting. They have been working quite hard to polish their baseball skills and work on everything they need to be stars.

Each week, they practice whatever they're working on then. After a few weeks of running and catching, they've learned a couple of important skills. Then they play a ballgame using the skills they've learned.

One of the important skills they've all learned so far (not just from their coaches, but from each other) is to work with their team when they are playing a game, or just throwing balls to each other. Teamwork is a very important thing, especially with sports. And all of the kids on the team have learned that, and showed it in many ways.

Good Job!
