Solomon's Sluggers Baseball Recreational League
Solomon's Sluggers Baseball Recreational League is part of the Solomon's Sunday Sports recreational league, which is an important part of the Solomon Schechter Day School of Long Island in Jericho, New York.

Solomon's Sunday Sports Recreational League has three distinct programs:

Solomon's Strikers Soccer, which is active in the fall
Solomon's Slammers Basketball, which is active in the winter
Solomon's Sluggers Baseball, which is active in the spring.

The games are only played on Sundays with schedules that avoid Jewish Holidays, which makes our program ideal for Jewish families.

The emphasis of this recreational league is on having fun, improving one’s skills, getting some exercise, becoming physically fit, learning good sportsmanship and fellowship, and not necessarily on winning, or playing a competitive game.  For example, sometimes a younger player needs an extra at bat or two in order to increase their confidence.

The league is co-ed and open to all children from Kindergarten through 5th grade.  We welcome Jewish children from our sponsor school, Solomon Schechter of Long Island, as well as any other school from all over Long Island and Queens.

A typical season is composed of 8 to 10 scheduled games, depending on holiday and school schedules.  All of our games are played at the Solomon Schechter Day School in Jericho, on Barbara Lane, on Sunday mornings.

The league is composed of multiple teams formed by grade level, so children about the same age and skill level play each other.  Rather than forming teams in advance (as we have done in the past), we will form teams each Sunday morning, depending on attendance.  We will strive to make the teams balanced, so that each side has a reasonable chance to score and win.  We typically only keep score at the highest grade levels.  The goal is for the kids to learn how to play the game and enjoy themselves.

Sessions are on Sunday mornings, 9:30am - 11:30am.  Each Sunday morning, we will:

  • Begin the session at 9:30am
  • The entire league together will perform warmups for 15 minutes
  • The teams will then receive instruction from the coaches on a particular skill
  • The teams will then play a game
  • The session ends at 11:30am at the latest.  Frequently (e.g. on hot days), if the kids tire, the games will end earlier.  This typically happens for the younger kids.
At the end of the season, we will host an awards ceremony, where each player will enjoy pizza and drinks and receive a personalized trophy.

In order for this style of program to be a complete success, we ask for parent volunteers to coach our teams, and seek corporate sponsorship to help offset the costs.  Sponsors are featured on the back of jerseys, as well as promoted on the league web sites.

We do ask that all who join our programs adhere to Solomon Schechter’s policy of bringing only Kosher, Peanut-Free drinks and snacks to our games and all activities.  Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase at the sessions.

The Solomon's Sunday Sports programs have been a very positive part of the Solomon Schechter experience. We really hope you are part of it.
